How & Why it’s Important to Review & Reset Your Goals Regularly in Life & Work
We all know about setting at the start of the year, and the benefits of keeping ourselves on track and accountable when it comes to implementing better habits, but have you thought about the value and benefits of reus and resetting your goals each week? Or each month?
Setting and reviewing goals regularly is so important for maintaining clarity and productivity in our work and personal lives.
Without it, we can find that a week, or month, or even 3 months have gone by, and we have nothing to show for our work, feel like we’ve been running around like a headless chicken without actually achieving anything, and end up wasting energy and getting stressed because we aren’t actually focusing on the things that matter.
Sound familiar?
This was me not that long ago. And, yes, you can be living slowly, seasonally, and intentionally, but without having a process that helps you stay on track, you can still end up stressed, overwhelmed, and chasing around in circles.
By taking the time to reassess our priorities and progress each week & each month, we can ensure that our efforts are aligned with our larger ambitions.
In the fast-paced world of work, it's easy to become entrenched in day-to-day tasks and lose sight of the bigger picture. Regular goal setting and review offer us the opportunity to recalibrate and refocus.
No matter how busy you are, it’s always beneficial to take a step back to move forward… that next step forward is only productive if it’s taking you in the right direction!
When it comes to productivity, there's a lot of merit in the idea of taking a step back to move forward. Pausing to review our goals allows us to assess what's working and what's not, and to make necessary adjustments. This process ensures that our efforts are being channeled effectively, which can ultimately lead to better outcomes.
Not to mention, checking in with how you’re feeling, if you are finding balance between work and play, and whether the work you are doing is contributing to the rest of your life and making you happy.
Because let’s face it, yeah, achieving big goals, life milestones, or being able to buy something fancy is nice. But if the day-to-day of achieving those big goals is making you miserable, then that defeats the whole point.
Life is found in the journey, the process that gets you to the goal, not just the goal itself. The accomplishment we feel achieving one of our goals is always fleeting, less fulfilling than we expect. That means your happiness and fulfillment, each, and every day is just as important as the goal, if not more, so.
When you periodically take the time to reset your work & life goals it provides an opportunity for reflection and learning. To celebrate your achievements, learn from your mistakes & lessons (I don’t believe anything is a failure if you can learn from it!), and incorporate those insights gained into your future plans.
This reflective aspect of the goal-setting cycle is essential for personal and professional growth. And in essential part of seasonal and cyclical living, where nature naturally provides us with the space to review, reflect, reset, celebrate our achievements, and daydream about new plants.
Resetting as part of Slow Productivity
When we combine this practice with the concept of slow productivity, it becomes a means to avoid burnout and maintain sustainable work habits whilst also nurturing & protecting your mental and physical health, find and maintain balance, build your intention and boost your creativity, passion, vitality, and enjoyment of life.
Not to mention expanding your vision of what’s possible….
Embracing this cycle of reviewing and resetting goals, actions & purpose aligns with the principles of slow productivity, which emphasises quality over quantity and taking an intentional, mindful approach to your work. And with the process of Seasonal living & planning.
When you incorporate moments of rest and reflection in your workflow it ensures that you’re not just constantly in motion, but that your actions are purposeful, intentional, and aligned with your beliefs, values, and objectives.
In the grand scheme of work and life, taking the time to review and reset our working goals is an investment in our long-term well-being and success. It helps us work smarter, not just harder and ensures that our efforts are contributing to our larger vision. Ultimately, this process fosters clarity, productivity, and a sense of balance in our endeavors.
My Simple & Effective Reset Process
Reassessing goals and actions on a weekly basis is a powerful habit that can significantly impact your overall health and wellbeing.
When we take time to regularly reflect on our progress and adjust our course, we can ensure that we stay aligned with our aspirations and priorities. Making sure each task we complete moves us a step closer rather than focusing on busy work.
This practice not only helps us stay focused and motivated, but also allows us to identify any potential obstacles or challenges that may be hindering our progress. Or places where we tend to procrastinate and choose busy work over bigger tasks that actually move us forward.
If you often feel like you’re treading water and not achieving anything each week, this practice can help you not only identify any problem areas that are keeping you stuck, keep you accountable, but also help you to see and celebrate things you have achieved.
By staying attuned to our evolving work & life circumstances, you can make necessary adjustments as you go, ultimately enhancing your productivity, accelerating our journey toward achieving your goals, and improving your quality of life and work-life balance in the process, which in turn has a positive impact on your health & wellbeing.
Embracing this intentional approach to goal-setting has been my practice for the past two years and I’m thoroughly addicted to it & the results it brings.
