Benefits of Raw Honey

Raw honey has been treasured for centuries. Not only is a natural sweetener, but it’s also for its many benefits for our bodies.

All of Emily & the Plants herbal products are not only made with local, organic, straight from the hive beeswax, but I’m also very proud to say that we use raw, local honey too.

What is Raw Honey?

Raw honey is essentially honey directly extracted from the honeycomb, bypassing the pasteurisation and filtration process that most commercial honey undergoes. This preserves its natural enzymes, antioxidants, and other beneficial compounds that would otherwise be removed such as pollen and propolis, both of which have their own (additional) properties for healing benefits.

These additional compounds in raw honey make it a healing powerhouse that provide us with easy acces to a huge range of benefits for both overall health and skincare.

Raw Honey Benefits for a Healthy Body Inside & Out

Here a just some of the things Raw honey can do:

Soothing a Sore Throat and Cough

The natural cough-suppressing properties of raw honey make it an effective remedy for soothing a sore throat and reducing cough symptoms. Its thick consistency provides a protective coating for the throat, relieving irritation and promoting healing. And it’s antimicrobial properties help to kill germs, and fight off infection-causing bacteria that may be contributing to the cough or sore throat.

For optimal relief, mix a spoonful of raw honey with warm water or herbal tea.

Improving Digestive Health

Raw honey contains prebiotics, which serve as a food source for beneficial bacteria in your gut. By nourishing these probiotics, raw honey can help maintain a healthy balance of gut bacteria, which is essential for proper digestion and nutrient absorption. The antibacterial properties of raw honey may also help reduce the risk of gastrointestinal infections and promote a healthy digestive system overall.

Boosting the Immune System

Raw honeys anti viral, anti fungal, and antibacterial properties mean that it has immune-boosting properties that can help strengthen your overall defense against infections. These compounds fight harmful bacteria and even certain types of fungi both internally, and when used topically on the skin.

Its high antioxidant content also supports immune health by reducing oxidative stress and inflammation in the body.

Relieves Allergy Symptoms

Local raw honey especially is full of the pollen and allergens from your local area. Taking a teaspoon full of raw honey a day can help the body build up a resilience to the pollen it comes into contact with in the air, thereby reducing your allergy symptoms. It’s anti-inflammatory properties also help to soothe irritated sore throats, and help reduce the body’s immune system response.

Nourishing and Revitalising Skincare

When it comes to skincare, raw honey is a versatile natural ingredient that can work wonders for your skin. Thanks to its antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties, raw honey can help treat and prevent acne by reducing bacteria on the skin's surface and soothing inflammation. Its natural enzymes also gently exfoliate the skin, promoting a smoother and brighter complexion.

It also acts as a barrier for the skin, attracting and retaining moisture in the skin. This hydration effect can help alleviate dryness, restore the skin's natural elasticity, and promote a more youthful appearance. Applying raw honey as a face mask or incorporating it into homemade skincare products can provide nourishment, hydration, and a radiant glow.

Skin Healing for Wounds and Burns

Raw honey's healing properties make it an excellent option for treating minor wounds, cuts, and burns. Its antimicrobial action can prevent infection, while its anti-inflammatory effects aid in reducing swelling and redness. Raw honey also creates a protective barrier over the wound, allowing it to heal faster and minimising the risk of scarring.

I recently used raw honey as an eye poultice for a sty and it disappeared completely in just a few days!!

Adding raw honey to your routine can provide a natural and holistic way to enhance your wellbeing and give your skin a healthy boost.

You can use raw honey in SO MANY ways it would be daft not to have some on hand.
